Stadium MK welcomes over 26,000 for Lionesses’ World Cup send-off

Over 26,000 spectators turned out to watch England Women in action at Stadium MK, Milton Keynes in their final match before the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The Lionesses, who will soon fly out to Australia for the summer tournament which begins on 20 July, played out a goalless draw with Portugal at the home of MK Dons on Saturday 1st July in front of a crowd of 26,267 watching on.

England were left frustrated as Rachel Daly and Alessia Russo had the better of the chances for Sarina Wiegman’s side. The Lionesses were unable to break down Portugal, a team who compete at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Off the pitch the fixture saw as the opportunity for the community of Milton Keynes, and beyond, to show their support to the Lionesses as they make their trip to Australia. Pre-match, the crowd saw Beth Mead note the importance of support of the Stadium MK crowd before an impressive Pre-match ceremony with Fire, pyrotechnics and on pitch displays. The event provided as a great advert for the game, despite the result, as fans had the opportunity to meet and cheer on players up close.

Even local players were involved, MK Dons SET player pathway girls had the opportunity to be involved Pre-match. MK Dons Women’s first team players, Chloe Sansom & Gemma Biggadike took time to meet fans and speak of the upcoming season in front of the 26,000+ Crowd.
